Losing weight during the holiday season can seem almost impossible with all of the activities and temptations. During this time of year, there seems to be fattening foods wherever we look. It starts with the Halloween candy, peaks with Thanksgiving dinner and then comes to a resounding finish with Christmas dinner (if you celebrate Christmas) and a nice encore of hors d’oeuvres at New Years Eve parties. There’s just no escaping it! Is there a way to actually keep your weight under control in the face of this? The following tips will help you maintain or even reduce your weight over the holidays.
When you’re going to a holiday party, never arrive with an empty stomach. Don’t go overboard, just have a snack containing lean protein or vegetables before going to the party. You don’t want to arrive at the party stuffed, so just make it a light snack. Just eat a small amount of something satisfying, so that you aren’t famished at the party and you can control yourself. This will enable you to enjoy a little something at the party without overeating.
If you’re like many people, you drink more alcohol than normal around the holidays. Aside from consuming extra calories, too much alcohol at a holiday party can make you behave in ways that you later regret. Reducing or eliminating alcohol is recommended for anyone who has the goal of losing weight. When you drink alcohol, you’re consuming lots of calories that don’t have any real nutritional value.
Another factor to consider is that when you drink, you’re inhibitions go away; this might feel good, but it makes you much more susceptible to the temptations of any food that’s nearby.
You need to use healthy ingredients when you cook. One hint that should be common sense, and that would be to avoid the holiday foods that are full of butter, lots of sugar, or are fatty foods. There is no rule that says holiday food needs to be thick and rich and heavy. Some of the dishes you already eat, can be made to taste just as good, but by using foods that are better for you. If you learn to prepare healthier foods, by doing a little research, then when the holidays come, you won’t need to be quite so concerned.
As we’ve seen, there are many strategies that can help you avoid gaining weight over the holidays. Keep your objectives in mind at all times, and you won’t have to deprive yourself -just don’t overdo it when reaching for holiday treats and don’t abandon your exercise program! Enjoy the holidays, but think ahead as well -imagine how good it would be to start the new year off without having extra pounds to worry about.
